Statement for “Porn Star Passion Play” – Pirate 2007

The DreamYes, it’s about sex …

If Freud was right, and all our motivations are influenced by the sex drive, then that has implications for making art.

Love and sex aren’t just feelings but have associated images. These vary enormously  from culture to culture, and person to person.

Looking at the long painting Plato’s Cave, you may find your perception challenged. The openings,  (I call them “apertures,”) filter what is seen within.  What makes people who they are?

What really drives us to live as we do? Love?  Sex?  Greed?  All of these can be subsumed under the heading of  Power. And control of language, including visual language, is a kind of power.

Art, in this case, isn’t a metaphor for sex, but the other way around. The complexity of human interaction is a model for the complexity of art-making.

The internet, the access to an unfathomable quantity of images, and our own imaginations, allow us to see the slippery, changing landscape of culture: elusive meanings, irrationality, media illusion, no ‘absolutes.’

In the 21st century, everyone is, or can be, a porn star.
